Singapore Business Fieldtrip
February 21-25th, 2016
SURABAYA - Business Lecturer, Daniela Tello, organized a field trip to Singapore from the 21st - 25th February 2016 for the Business Management, Business Hospitality and Tourism students.
In order to provide an International perspective of Business to our students, the field trip intended to cover several important topics from the perspective of firms in diverse industries. During these occasions, students gained a more concrete and educative outlook from the practitioners who are engaged with different companies operating within the Asian-Pacific markets who represent the MICE, social media, manufacturing and hospitality and tourism industries.
Further to visiting these organizations, the students also took an opportunity to visit Raffles College of Higher Education Singapore and attended the University of Chester presentation to learn important and beneficial information about the schools activities and facilities.
The first company visit the students took insight from was LinkedIn, which is the South East Asian branch of the informational & technological company from the United States. LinkedIn provided the students a perspective about Asian markets, the business importance of networking and social media, and the significance of strong culture and values on how to manage global operations in today’s competitive environment.

“LinkedIn has been one of my favourite field trips whilst studying, and I was really amazed with their office facilities and how the HR system works. It makes their employees energetic, positive and friendly. I would be very happy if I had an opportunity to work at LinkedIn.”
Neola Ardina Mulya (Business Management, Jan'2015 intake).
Next on the field trip agenda and to gain a better understanding of the MICE industry and how it works, students paid a visit to Esplanade Theatres, a performing arts centre located in Marina Bay, which is a non-profit organization hosting the largest number of events in the region. During this visit students were given an overview of the installations and gained an understanding of the management and the solvency of the organization.
“Esplanade Theatres is one of the most impressive no-profit performance art buildings in the world that has gained the interest of many individuals around the globe with its impressive interior and also exterior.”
Erwindiana Firza Meenaindina (Business Management. Apr'15 intake)
The students then ventured on with their next visit being NEWater which is an organization managed by PUB, the Singaporean Agency for water supply. Whilst being shown around this impressive operation, the students gained valuable knowledge and insight into its processes and were give an overview of how the company manages its production system with their advanced technology for the treatment of recycled water.
“In this field trip we were able to understand how large companies have neat and well-organized steps that are adhered to by their employees. We learnt that by having well-organized steps, this will be an easier process for the company to run and avoid mistakes that can affect the result of its products.”
Fatimah Muchsin Mogebel (Business Management, Jul'2014 intake)
The final destination of the field trip was Hotel Vagabond designed by architect Jacques Garcia, which is a 5 star boutique hotel incorporating a unique concept. The Sales and Marketing Manager welcomed the students who then provided them with an informative guided tour around the hotel. This also included a private meeting with the students to explain in detail the concept of the business and the target market and growth perspectives for a boutique hotel working with a niche strategy.
“We had a tour to every part of the hotel, which included the hotel salon, bar, restaurant, bathrooms, lift, rooms (there are a pictures of Jacques Garcia’s twins in one of the rooms, and a picture of a princess that’s friends with Jacques Garcia) there are also a lot of different types of rooms in the hotel which are; classic, deluxe, classic with shared terrace, deluxe with shared terrace, art suite, junior site, and vagabond suite. They even showed us the secret stairs that will take you to the special room for the artists & musicians that display their works in Hotel Vagabond”
Jacqueline Arquette Irenius (Business Management, Oct'2014 intake).
Overall, having an international 5 day field trip was most beneficial; the students were given an excellent opportunity to understand the intricate operations and management prowess of international firms from different perspectives of these diverse industries. Industry and competitive market based activities such as this are an integral part in providing guidance and complete formation for future entrepreneurs.
