Raffles Surabaya
Fashion Talk & University of Chester Presentation
February 25-26th, 2016
SURABAYA - Mr. Joe SPINELLI, Principal of Raffles College of Higher Education who paid a welcoming two day visit to Raffles Surabaya Indonesia on 25 - 26 February 2016 delivered an inspiring talk on Fashion, and gave an exciting presentation about the University of Chester.
Day one introduced us formally to Mr. Joe SPINELLI, who then took the stage and explained how students at Raffles Singapore elaborated on their creativity and ideas which provided a self-challenge in something that was out of their comfort zones. The students were also triggered to invent new techniques such as reconstructing existing garments, achieving zero waste and ones that were quite attractive. One of the Raffles Singapore students successfully completed a blind draping, since she thought that draping, after following the technique, was not challenging any more. This new approach of fashion has been introduced to create new designs.
The event was also attended by Raffles Singapore’s alumni; Cynthia Fransisca, Dewi Asthari, and Ivana Lukito.
Ivana Lukito, who graduated in December 2015, shared her experience during her final collection’s making process and expressed that she channelled the inspiration by exploring her sense of nationality in which she thought most of the Indonesian youth were not really connected by the culture. She transformed the traditional pattern that was usually found on traditional woven cloth into a magnificent applique over the skirt and by putting glass beads over the twill to add sparkle to the coat.
“These inspirational words and visual instruction of encouragement for us as fashion students was a motivational message to be more creative by showing unique and fashionably designed garments for our final collections”.
Arman Hifni Ramadhan (Fashion Marketing – Jul' 2015 intake)
“I thought Mr. Joe SPINELLI presented a lot of ideas and solutions for students to employ and finish their mini collections. He is very creative and has a very good taste for fashion.”
Giovanny Kijanto (Fashion Design – Jan' 2014 intake)
Day two arrived which had many students from different departments attend another informative and motivational presentation by Mr Joe SPINELLI.
“I found the presentation given by Mr. Joe very interesting, it was very informative and helpful for the students to gain more insight about how Raffles is developing. We were also very fortunate to see lots of projects from the Design students in Singapore that had won international competitions. Also, I really liked the news of the collaboration between Raffles Institute and the University of Chester which allows us students to have Honors in our degree. I hope in the future these kinds of presentations will be held frequently so the students can be updated with important and meaningful information about Raffles.”
Aldia Juwita (Business Management - Oct' 2015 intake)
Overall, the two day talk and University of Chester presentation conducted by Mr. Joe SPINELLI provided a lot of potential insight and motivation for the students. The students now have a breath of new energy and vision that is very clear in bringing out their best work, particularly in design with unlimited creativity amidst rampant competition, especially in the fashion world.
The students were very welcoming concerning the news of the collaboration with the University of Chester. This allows Raffles students the opportunity to be more competitive and constructive in a globalized world, not only the Asia pacific regions. This means worldwide study at Raffles will benefit and enable each individual student to look beyond their academic qualifications and plan ahead to design their own future.
